Rock For a Kidney!
Type 1 Diabetes is close to my heart. Not because I think it's a super cool thing and I chose to embrace it. I had no choice. I was diagnosed with it when I was just turning twelve and have now lived with it for thirty-six years. I cannot count how many times someone has learned that I have diabetes and then proceeded to regale me with their personal tales that go something like this..."Oh, my grandma had diabetes. She went blind and died really young, " or "Oh, I had a great aunt who was diabetic. She was blind and had to have her foot amputated," or "My friend's Uncle Cyrus has diabetes. He had a stroke and is in a wheelchair. Lost both his legs. Now he's also on dialysis." Thanks for sharing the good news, Folks. I know people have no idea how these stories affect me and it's not their fault either. It's just that...when you live with Type 1 Diabetes you have to get used to a constant companion: Fear. You learn to live with it; confronting and ignoring it in equal measures. Sometimes it hits close to home and sometimes it actually hits home. Two years ago I noticed my vision was blurred in one eye. Long story short--it was due to my diabetes. The vision in my left eye went from 20/30 to 20/200 in a matter of weeks. After three surgeries, the issue was stabilized (for now). My vision is not what it used to be nor will it ever be again but I feel like I have won the lottery. However; the fear is always there. When will my vision get worse? Will I have a stroke? Why do my hands go numb all the time? Why do I lose my balance? Why do I have pain in my feet? Nagging, cloying fear and then you hear about someone else who has diabetes and is facing things far more harrowing like a friend and co-workers husband. He's young. He is a husband. He is a father. And he needs a kidney. There will be a benefit and silent auction for him on August 8, 2015. I have donated a pet photo session to the silent auction but I was just at the site, looking through all the other auction items and wow! What an incredible assortment of auction items! Please check out the site and if you live in the area, come by and hang out on the 8th. It will be a great time for an even greater cause!
